PBT vs ABS Keycaps: What Wears, What Shines, What to Buy

You see it on WASD and the spacebar before anywhere else. A few months in, the matte surface under your busiest keys turns glossy and feels faintly greasy on a warm afternoon. That is keycap shine, and ABS gets it sooner because it is the softer plastic: finger oil and friction polish its surface texture flat.

PBT is harder, shrugs off oil better, and resists UV light, so its grainy finish lasts longer and its colours fade more slowly.

Longer is the honest word, though. PBT shines too, it just takes more time, and a set with a thin or lightly textured surface can go glossy surprisingly fast:

ABS does win on the big keys. Large PBT keycaps can warp as they cool in the mould, which is why some manufacturers make spacebars in ABS even when the rest of the set is PBT. The Legend Process Tells You More Than the Plastic

A faded "E" annoys most people more than a shiny one, and whether letters fade depends on how they got onto the cap. Four processes cover almost every set you will find:

• Double-shot: two plastics moulded together, one forming the legend and one the shell. The legend goes all the way through, so it cannot wear off. Both PBT and ABS are made this way, and GMK, the best-known premium keycap maker, uses double-shot ABS.
• Dye-sublimation: ink is driven into the plastic with heat. The letters survive years of typing but block backlight.
• Painted and laser-etched: a coated cap with the legend burned out by laser, common on RGB gaming boards because light passes through the etched letters.
• Pad-printed: ink stamped on the surface. The cheapest method and the first to fade.

Dye-sub is also the clearest material clue on any listing. Do ABS Keycaps Sound Better?

ABS keycaps sound higher-pitched and clackier than PBT keycaps of similar thickness, while PBT gives the deeper, "thockier" note. Whether that is better is taste. Thickness and the keyboard underneath shape the sound more than the plastic does.

Cheap, thin ABS gave the material its tinny reputation. Thick premium ABS is bought on purpose for its sound, and keyboard hobbyists who spend the most on caps often choose it:

How to Tell If Keycaps Are PBT or ABS

The fastest way to tell PBT from ABS keycaps is the product listing, which normally names both the material and the legend process. Without one, look and feel: PBT is usually matte and slightly gritty, ABS smoother and often glossy, and a shiny WASD cluster on an old board is almost always ABS.

Two clues beat the finger test. Dye-sub legends point to PBT. Fully see-through caps point the other way, to ABS or polycarbonate, because PBT cannot be made fully transparent. Glowing legends alone prove little: PBT shine-through sets pass light through a translucent legend layer, and Akko's two Shine-Through sets are listed as PBT double-shot.

Blends muddy the picture. Akko lists its Greedy Bear and Shiny Kitten sets as "PBT+PC", and the gradient-hybrid themes of its 65% and 75% sets combine PBT double-shot caps with screen-printed PC ones. A seller who writes only "double-shot" has told you the legends will last and nothing about the plastic, so ask before you buy if the material decides it for you.

Where PC Keycaps Fit In

PC, polycarbonate, is the third keycap plastic, and it exists for light. It can be made fully transparent, so every RGB colour passes straight through the cap.

Akko's PC Transparent set is the plain version: 82 Cherry-profile keys with screen-printed legends, sized for Akko's 75% boards, at €23.79. The Quantum Horizon set pushes the idea further with 126 mirror-electroplated PC caps co-designed with OSHID. The trade is feel, because a clear glossy surface has none of PBT's grain.
