10 Best Security Cameras on Amazon

Ten home security cameras ranked by Amazon star rating and review volume, each with the three things buyers most often praise. We counted the complaints too — battery life is where half of them lose patience.

Updated 2026-08-02Advertising Disclosure

How we make money. We earn a commission when you buy through links on this site, at no extra cost to you. Those commissions come from affiliate programmes run by the brands and by third-party networks, not from you.

How that affects this list. Products from brands we have a commercial relationship with are listed first. Products we earn little or nothing from can still appear, lower down, when they belong in the comparison.

How the order is set. The top three slots are named picks — best overall, most popular, best value — and each states the measurement it won on. Every product after them is ordered by one fixed formula: the Amazon star rating and review count, applied identically. No brand can pay for a slot, a badge or a score.

We do not test products in a lab. Read the full method on How We Rank.

We do not rate these ourselves. Every claim on this page is tied to public Amazon rating and review-theme data, and carries the count it came from.

Common security camera problems

Dropped connections are the most common complaint

43% positive

WinnerReviews counted 328 mentions of connectivity across the cameras on this page and only 43% were positive — Reolink at 40% across 223 mentions, eufy at 49% across 105. A camera on the far side of a house is at the edge of Wi-Fi range and a battery camera cannot use a wired backhaul, so this is the failure most people actually live with.

140 of 328 mentions, 2 brands

Solar does not mean you never touch it again

51% positive

Battery life drew 735 mentions across four brands and only 51% were positive — eufy at 49%, Reolink at 51%, aosu at 59%. Solar panels top the battery up rather than run the camera, so a busy driveway in a northern winter still needs charging by hand. Judge the panel by where it will sit, not by the fact it exists.

373 of 735 mentions, 4 brands

Motion detection sends you alerts you do not want

56% positive

Motion detection drew 396 mentions and 56% were positive, with a wide spread: Reolink at 44%, aosu at 51%, eufy at 65%. Cars, cats, rain and shadows all trigger cameras that do not do on-device person detection well. This is the setting most people spend their first week tuning.

How to choose a home security camera

Battery life is where solar cameras disappoint people

We counted 735 mentions of battery life across the cameras on this page and only 51% were positive. The spread by brand is real but narrow — eufy at 49%, Reolink at 51%, aosu at 59% — which says the problem is the format rather than the manufacturer.

A solar panel trickles charge; it does not power the camera. A camera that wakes twenty times an hour on a busy street, records in 4K and streams over marginal Wi-Fi will outrun a small panel in winter, and then you are on a ladder. Before buying solar, look at where the panel would actually sit and how much direct sun that spot gets in January, not June.

The r/homesecurity crowd has field-tested the workarounds. Owners there rate eufy's solar line for its built-in panels and detection, note that Reolink's brightest solar models want a well-lit position to earn their keep, and one owner went further: he swapped the panels for USB chargers on a landscape-light timer, charging six hours a night, precisely to stop the daily solar trickle wearing out the battery. You do not have to go that far — but position the panel for real sun, or plan on the ladder.

Wired systems solve the two biggest complaints

The two loudest problems in our counts are connectivity at 43% positive and battery life at 51%. A wired NVR system removes both: power over Ethernet means no batteries, and a cable means no Wi-Fi range problem.

The cost is installation. Running cable through walls and soffits is a real job, and it fixes each camera in place permanently. If you own the house and want cameras that you never think about again, wired is the honest answer. If you rent, or want to move a camera next month, it is not.

Check what happens without a subscription

The important question is not whether a subscription exists but what stops working without one. Some cameras store locally to a card or a hub and lose nothing; others keep only a few seconds of clip, drop person detection, or stop recording entirely.

Several cameras on this page advertise no monthly fee with local storage, which is the arrangement to prefer if you dislike recurring costs. Confirm it on the product page before buying — this is a detail manufacturers change between model years.

Resolution matters less than field of view and night performance

4K sounds decisive and rarely is. A 4K camera covering a whole driveway spreads those pixels thin, and the useful measure is pixels across the part of the scene you care about — a face at the door, a plate on the drive.

What separates a useful recording from a useless one at night is the sensor and the illumination, not the megapixel count. Cameras with a spotlight for colour night vision consistently produce more identifiable footage than a higher-resolution camera falling back to infrared.

Expect to spend a week tuning motion alerts

Motion detection drew 396 mentions in our count and only 56% were positive, ranging from Reolink at 44% to eufy at 65%. Almost every complaint is the same one: too many alerts, for things that do not matter.

Every camera here has detection zones and sensitivity settings, and every one of them needs those set for your specific view. Budget an evening for it. The alternative is what most people do — turn notifications off entirely, which defeats the point of having the camera.

Good machine, one real problem. We find it comes apart on connectivity, and it is not a handful of people saying so.

Set that aside and it holds together. Setup is the part people praise without qualifying it, and we found the rest sitting comfortably where it needs to.

Reliability is what buyers write about most here, and it is not what the machine is best at. Worth knowing which way that cuts for you.

Here is how we would put it. Get this one if setup matters more to you than connectivity does. That is the whole trade, and it is what decided its place on this page.

Amazon has not published grouped review themes for this listing, so there is nothing here for us to count. What we can tell you is that 124 people have rated it 4.1 out of 5.

That is a thin sample by the standards of this list, and a thin sample moves fast — a good early average can slide once a few thousand more people have used the thing.

Frequently asked

Do security cameras need a subscription?
Not necessarily. Several cameras on this page record to local storage with no monthly fee. What varies is what a subscription adds — usually cloud backup, longer history and smarter detection. The question worth asking is what stops working without it, and that answer is on each product page. The question is asked so often on r/homesecurity that regulars answer it with a standing shortlist — Ubiquiti, Reolink, Tapo — all bought once and run on local storage. Reolink, which appears on this page, draws one recurring caveat there: "the configuration can be complicated" next to app-first brands, the usual trade for owning your footage outright.
Are solar security cameras any good?
They work well in a sunny position with moderate activity, and disappoint in shade or in winter. Across the cameras here, battery-life mentions ran only 51% positive across 735 mentions. The panel tops the battery up rather than running the camera, so a busy view in a northern winter can still outrun it.
Is a wired or wireless security camera better?
Wired is better if you can install it: no batteries and no Wi-Fi range problem, which are the two most common complaints in our counts. Wireless is better if you rent, cannot run cable, or want to move cameras around. The trade is genuinely install effort against ongoing maintenance.
What is the best security camera for outside?
One with a weather rating, a spotlight for colour night vision, and a power arrangement that suits the position — mains or wired where you can, solar only where the panel gets real winter sun. Our order is set by a fixed formula over Amazon rating and review count, with the top three slots named picks that each state what they won.
How much internet speed do security cameras use?
Recording locally uses none. Live viewing and cloud upload are where it matters, and a 4K camera streaming continuously can use several megabits. The more common problem in our counts is not total bandwidth but signal strength at the camera: connectivity mentions ran only 43% positive.
Can security cameras work without Wi-Fi?
Wired NVR systems can — they record to a recorder over cable and need the network only for remote viewing. Battery and solar cameras generally cannot; they depend on Wi-Fi to do anything useful. If your Wi-Fi does not reach the camera position reliably, that decides the category for you.
Why do I get so many false motion alerts?
Because the default sensitivity is set high and the detection zone covers the whole frame. Cars, pets, rain and moving shadows all trigger it. Motion detection drew 396 mentions on this page and only 56% were positive. Every camera here lets you draw zones and lower sensitivity — it is worth the evening it takes.
Is 4K worth it for a security camera?
Less than the marketing suggests. What matters is pixels across the part of the scene you care about, so a 2K camera on a tight view can beat a 4K camera covering a whole garden. At night, the spotlight and sensor matter far more than the resolution.
