10 Best Countertop Ice Makers on Amazon

Ten countertop ice makers ranked by Amazon star rating and review volume, each with the three things buyers most often praise about it. We counted the complaints too — noise splits opinion on every brand on this list.

How we make money. We earn a commission when you buy through links on this site, at no extra cost to you. Those commissions come from affiliate programmes run by the brands and by third-party networks, not from you.

How that affects this list. Products from brands we have a commercial relationship with are listed first. Products we earn little or nothing from can still appear, lower down, when they belong in the comparison.

How the order is set. The top three slots are named picks — best overall, most popular, best value — and each states the measurement it won on. Every product after them is ordered by one fixed formula: the Amazon star rating and review count, applied identically. No brand can pay for a slot, a badge or a score.

We do not test products in a lab. Read the full method on How We Rank.

Common countertop ice maker problems

It will be louder than you expect

54% positive

WinnerReviews counted 1,844 mentions of noise across these ten countertop ice makers and only 54% were positive — the complaint appeared for six of the six brands on this list, so it is a category problem, not a bad unit.

991 of 1,844 mentions, 6 brands

Durability is the weakest link

45% positive

Across the three brands where buyers raised durability, WinnerReviews found only 45% of those mentions were positive, and for ecozy the theme came out negative overall at 27% — budget for this failing inside a couple of years.

220 of 486 mentions, 3 brands

The ice melts in the basket

33% positive

The storage bin is insulated, not refrigerated, so ice melts back into the reservoir and gets remade; WinnerReviews found melting was the lowest-rated theme of all at 33% positive. Move ice to your freezer if you need it later.

How to choose countertop ice makers

Noise is the one thing no brand on this list has solved

When we counted what buyers argue about, noise came up for five of the six brands here — and it was the only theme where opinion consistently split. Kismile sat at 48% positive across 269 mentions, COWSAR at 52% across 263, ecozy at 54%, Antarctic Star at 55%, and EUHOMY at 63% across 444 mentions.

No machine in this category scored well on it. These units run a compressor and an auger in a small plastic body with no sound insulation, and they cycle on and off all day rather than running once and stopping. If the machine will live in an open-plan kitchen or anywhere near where people sleep, treat noise as the deciding factor rather than a footnote — it is the complaint most likely to make you stop using the thing.

The daily output number is not the number that matters

Every listing leads with a pounds-per-day figure — 26, 35, 44. That number is measured in ideal conditions, running non-stop with cold inlet water, and almost nobody runs their machine that way.

The number that actually governs your day is basket capacity, which is usually between one and three pounds. A machine rated at 44 lbs a day still hands you roughly two pounds at a time and then needs to make more. If you are filling a cooler, none of these are the right tool; if you are filling glasses, the output rating barely matters.

None of these freeze — the ice melts and gets remade

This is the single most misunderstood thing about countertop ice makers. The storage basket is not a freezer. It is an insulated bin, and ice sitting in it slowly melts back into the reservoir below, where the machine re-freezes it.

In practice that means the machine keeps cycling as long as it is switched on, and it means you cannot make ice in the morning and expect a full basket that evening. Make it when you need it, or move it to your freezer for storage.

Nugget, pebble and chewable are the same ice

Brands use all three words for the same thing: soft compressed flake ice that you can chew, the kind associated with Sonic. If a listing says nugget and another says pebble, that difference is marketing, not engineering.

The real split is nugget versus bullet. Bullet ice — the hollow cylinders — comes from a simpler and cheaper mechanism, freezes faster, and lasts longer in a drink. Nugget machines cost more and are generally slower, and what you are paying for is the texture.

Self-cleaning is a rinse, not a descale

Most machines on this list advertise a self-cleaning cycle. It circulates water through the system and drains it. It does not remove the mineral scale that builds up on the evaporator, which is the thing that eventually slows ice production and makes ice taste wrong.

Descaling still needs to be done by hand with a citric-acid or vinegar solution, roughly monthly with hard water. Buyers who skip it are a meaningful share of the durability complaints — EUHOMY's durability theme ran at only 54% positive across 267 mentions.

Frequently asked

Is it worth it to get a countertop ice maker?
It is worth it if you want a specific ice texture on demand and your freezer's ice tray or dispenser is not giving you that. It is not worth it as a way to store large quantities of ice — the basket is not a freezer and the ice melts back into the reservoir. Buy it for texture and convenience, not capacity.
What are the drawbacks of countertop ice makers?
Noise is the big one. Across the five brands on this page, only 48% to 63% of buyers who mentioned noise were positive about it — no machine here scored well. After that: the ice does not stay frozen in the basket, the units take up real counter space, most need refilling by hand, and the advertised daily output is far higher than what the basket actually holds at any one moment.
How long can ice sit in a countertop ice maker?
Hours at most, and it will not stay dry. The storage basket is insulated but not refrigerated, so ice gradually melts back into the reservoir and the machine re-freezes it. If you need ice later, transfer it to your freezer in a bag rather than leaving it in the machine.
Is a nugget ice maker worth it?
If chewable ice is specifically what you want, yes — nothing else produces it at home. Nugget machines generally cost more and produce more slowly than bullet-ice machines, so if the texture is not the point, a bullet machine gives you more ice for less money.
Is there a difference between nugget ice and pebble ice?
No. Both terms describe the same soft compressed flake ice, and brands use them interchangeably along with 'chewable' and 'Sonic-style'. The meaningful distinction is nugget or pebble ice versus bullet ice, which is a different shape made by a different and cheaper mechanism.
What is the best countertop ice maker?
There is no single answer, and any page that gives you one without saying how it decided is worth distrusting. Our list is ordered by a fixed formula over each product's Amazon star rating and review count, applied identically to every product, with products we have a commercial relationship with placed first — the full method is on our How We Rank page.
Is there a built in nugget ice maker for home?
Yes, undercounter nugget machines exist and plumb into a water line, but they are a different category with a much higher price and installation cost. Everything on this page is a portable countertop unit you fill by hand.
Do countertop ice makers need a water line?
Most do not — you fill a reservoir by hand, typically every few hours of operation. A few models offer an optional water-line connection for continuous operation. If refilling would annoy you, check for that feature specifically before buying, because it is not standard.
